Skiing
No, it doesn't often snow in Milpitas, but many love to head to the slopes near Lake Tahoe and Yosemite. Almost all the nearby resorts will be open for Christmas... except that a good section of I-80 is closed. Lake Tahoe ski resorts reported more than 2 feet of snow overnight. A winter storm warning remained in effect through late afternoon today.

Asian immigrants use medical technology to satisfy age-old desire: A son
By Mike Swift, Mercury News
For some South Asian couples, having a boy is a "status symbol," said Deepka Lalwani of Milpitas, the founder and president of Indian Business & Professional Women, a nonprofit business support network. "If a woman has male children, she feels in her family, certainly with her in-laws, that her status will go up because now she is the mother of a male child."

Shimmy-shake to get in shape for 2009
by Todd R. Brown, San Jose Culture Examiner
Another online option for shimmy-shakers is the Bay Area Bellydance Meetup. The group plans its first meeting Jan. 9 in San Jose in collaboration with the Bay Area Drum Circle, then hosts a Bellydance 101 event Jan. 14 in Milpitas.

New study shows massive earthquake could cause Anderson Dam to fail
By Paul Rogers, Mercury News
Anderson Dam was built in 1950. It holds 90,000 acre-feet of water when full, more than the other nine reservoirs in the county combined. The dam sits east of Highway 101, along the Calaveras Fault, which runs from Hollister to Milpitas.

San Jose girl recovering after rare brain surgery
By Denis C. Theriault, Mercury News
By the fall, Natalie went back at Milpitas Christian School, repeating the first grade (as a right-handed writer, this time; she has yet to regain full motion in her stroke-afflicted left hand) but finding herself especially popular among her classmates.

Where is the economy headed in 2009?
By Tom Abate, Chronicle
SanDisk is a 20-year-old Milpitas firm that helped invent the flash memory chips that store data on digital cameras and cell phones. It remains a technology leader, but the recession has cut into its profit and in 2008 it was the target of a hostile takeover by South Korea's Samsung, which ultimately withdrew its offer as SanDisk's shares declined. For SanDisk, 2009 will be a pivotal year to regain its independent footing or risk becoming consumed.

Forty degrees & kindness
By Tingting Cojuangco, PhilStar
Our US trips have been pretty much the same for many years. Palo Alto is our first stop for doctors, followed by shopping in the mall near Stanford. The rest of the trip usually includes visiting other places, such as the outlets at Gilroy and Milpitas, iHop, Isobune.
